Fine Gael Minister of State John Cummins has welcomed the announcement today of 11 new special classes in Waterford.
Minister Cummins said: “I am pleased that an additional 11 new special classes in Waterford have been sanctioned for the upcoming school year, seven at primary level and four at post-primary level.
“This is an initial list and it is expected that there will be further announcements in due course.
“I want to thank the parents of students with additional needs and the schools that have engaged with me directly over the past several months.
“I know this is an important day for so many parents which will offer some relief and reassurance.
“However, I will continue to push for more special classes in Waterford so every child with additional needs gets the education and services that they deserve.
“It’s important to put today’s initial announcement in context. Nationally 209 of the 400 classes provided for in Budget 2025 have been officially sanctioned with the NCSE continuing to engage intensively with school patron bodies to reach the 400 class target.
“This Government will continue to prioritise the provision of special education.
“This is an issue which I am exceptionally passionate about and will continue to work in collaboration with all stakeholders to achieve our shared goal of ensuring there are sufficient classes for children and young adults across Waterford.”
