Waterford has chosen to elect eight Fine Gael councillors in the 2024 local elections, making Fine Gael the largest party on Waterford City and County Council. Poll topping performances by Cllr. Lola O’Sullivan, Cllr. Liam Brazil, Cllr. Seanie Power and Cllr. Damien Geoghegan were the stand out story of the election. They were joined by Cllr. Pat Nugent,Cllr. Frank Quinlan, newly elected Cllr. Niamh O’Donovan and Cllr. Jim Darcy who returns to the council after an absence of ten years.
Senator John Cummins stated: “This is a phenomenal result for the Fine Gael team in Waterford, to win eight seats, a gain of one and be the largest party on Waterford City and County Council was our goal at the start of the campaign and that’s exactly what we achieved. We had eleven fantastic candidates who put their heart and soul into their respective campaigns, and I was absolutely delighted to be able to assist each of them over the last five months of the campaign”.
“I’m delighted to see eight very capable and hard-working councillors elected for Fine Gael and I am really looking forward to working with each of them over the next five years. We are really lucky in Waterford to have such a high calibre of representatives who are proactive and hardworking - this weekend’s result evidently reflects this. Topping the poll in Tramore, Portlaw-Kilmacthomas and Dungarvan highlights the excellent people we have in Fine Gael and I know firsthand how hard they work and how dedicated they are to bettering our community.”
“Politics is about hard work on the ground, day in day out and while there’s plenty of commentators and opposition voices who tried to write off our party here in Waterford and nationally, we’ve worked so hard, out of the limelight of the camera or microphone to build a strong and united Fine Gael team here in Waterford and that’s exactly what we have now”.
Senator Cummins continued “The goal of the Fine Gael party since the last general election has been to regain a seat here in Waterford and I’m determined that with the help of our eight councillors and party members and supporters that I can achieve that aim. As I’ve said before, if I’m honoured to be elected at the next general election, I’ll be the most senior Fine Gael politician in the entire South East region which can only be a positive for Waterford going forward”.
Senator Cummins concluded: “Finally I want to congratulate everyone who has been elected and commend everyone who put themselves forward for election. It’s not an easy thing to put your name out there and I have huge respect for everyone that does. I want to thank everyone who turned out to vote for Fine Gael and placed their trust in us”.
